Iowa State University Entomology Club members are getting more national publicity for the food they cook that includes bugs. A crew from the “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” T-V show is in Ames to film the students making jello filled with crickets and carmel apples covered in mealworms. Entomology club advisor Joel Coats says the I-S-U feature will be part of a longer show. The show will feature areas of the world where insects are used as foods. Coats says the students developed the bug-filled recipes for their annual “Insect Horror Film Festival” held each fall.Coats says the film festival is a way to knock down some of the misconceptions about insects. Coats says insects have as much nutritional value as most of the other food sources we eat, but they’re not utilized by Americans.”Ripley’s Believe It or Not” airs on the Family Channel on cable tv. Coats doesn’t know when the show featuring I-S-U students will air.
