After nearly becoming extinct, the famous bird of most of our Thanksgiving celebrations is again living in the wild in Iowa. Rich Patterson of the Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapids says wild turkeys nearly disappeared from the state near the turn of the century.Patterson says the wild turkey is now even seen in timber areas in cities.Turkeys are a special bird, once touted by Benjamin Franklin as the national bird. Patterson says a wild turkey can weigh up to 25 pounds.
