Governor Vilsack wants big donation to honor WWII vets

Some of those who served in this century’s wars gathered at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines today for the annual service on the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.” The ceremony included a celebration of military service and a remembrance of those who made the “ultimate sacrifice”. Speaking in the structure built to honor veterans, Governor Tom Vilsack said Iowa should help fund another important monument planned in Washington to honor World War Two veterans. Vilsack says he’ll push the Iowa legislature to kick in one dollar for every Iowan who served in the War. That would cost the state 278-thousand dollars.Republicans in the legislature proposed spending one-dollar for every living veteran in the state, but Vilsack says that 75-thousand dollars isn’t enough. Vilsack told the veterans as governor he makes hundreds of speeches, but said talking to them is special.The World War Two memorial will be constructed at the Rainbow Pool site between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. The monument will cost 100-million dollars.
