Vilsack against speed limit increase

Governor Vilsack spokes on several topics during his weekly news conferenc e. Vilsack says he does NOT want to raise the speed limit on Iowa’s Interstates. Last week, the top Republican in the Legislature said he’ll push to hike the legal limit for Interstate driving. Vilsack opposes the change, primarily because he says it’ll raise Iowan’s car insurance rates.The posted limit on Iowa Interstates is 65 miles per hour.While he doesn’t know the details, Governor Vilsack is hailing the agreement reached between American and Chinese negotiators which is likely to bring about China’s membership in the World Trade Organization, or W-T-O. At the end of this month, Vilsack will attend the W-T-0 meeting in Seattle.Vilsack says China’s W-T-O membership will create a structure so the U-S can do business in China with confidence.By next week, the governor hopes to have a plan in place to cut up to 35-million dollars in state spending and re-allocate that money to “priority” areas of state government. Vilsack may present his plan to lawmakers in January.Vilsack says there’s a need to re-prioritize spending as the state’s economy has leveled off a bit, particularly the farm sector.
