The job crunch is hitting police departments around the state. Mason City police chief David Ellingson says he can’t even get many to apply for openings.Ellingson says in the 1980s, over a hundred would apply for police work. Now, he gets a few dozen.Ellingson has three openings in his department.Ellingson is trying new modes of advertising to attract new people to his police department. He says they targeted smaller newspapers and internet advertising.
