Four young protesters climbed the Iowa Capitol this morning and unfurled a banner below the dome reading “Build Schools, Not Bombs.” Radio Iowa interviewed one of the Grinnell College students via cell phone, who was perched 150 feet up.Brooke Heaton of Des Moines said he’s ready to be arrested to get the pro-school, anti-defense spending message out. The 21-year-old Grinnell student says 280-BILLION dollars a year goes to the Pentagon and only 31-BILLION to education. As a full-time student, Heaton was asked why he wasn’t in school, since he’s championing the need for a better education. He says his advisor and other professors are supporting him and he’s only missing one class. All four people who climbed the dome were charged with criminal trespassing by capitol police and a fifth person who stayed on the ground was charged with aiding and abetting. All five were fined 100-dollars each and ordered to pay court costs.
