Governor Vilsack’s dramatic tax reform proposal isn’t getting the endorsement of Republican legislators. House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs, says he’s skeptical of the plan to eliminate 12 lines from the income tax form which subtract the taxes Iowans pay to the feds from their state tax.Vilsack also wants to establish a “people’s referendum” which would allow the voters to decide any future sales or income tax increases. Siegrist says it might take too long to put the referendum in place.Siegrist says the democrat Governor’s proposal doesn’t have much chance of winning Republican’s endorsement.Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson says Vilsack’s proposal will go nowhere.And Iverson says it already takes 60 percent of legislators to approve any tax increase. He says that protects the voters just as well as any direct referendum would, and there’s no expense from a special election.
