Two more county sheriffs plan to hang up their badges and guns — that makes nine in two years to quit statewide. Wright County Sheriff Vern Elstonwill retire in the spring after 33 years on the job. Elston says there’ve been many changes in law enforcement since he started his career in 1967.Elston will turn 67 next year. Last week, Keith Whitlatch announced he’s retiring as Cedar County’s sheriff December 31st, saying he wants to spend more time with his family, his friends & his horses. Franklin County Sheriff Duane Payne, also says he’ll retire.
