A Legislative study committee is recommending that some of the state’s tobacco settlement money go to fix up schools. The recommendation is to spend 200-million on school fire and safety needs over the next ten years. Senator Jeff Angelo, a republican from Creston, says the committee favors this approach over using state funding for schools.Angelo says he’s concerned about the condition of some of the state schools.The legislature will decide how to spend the tobacco settlement money. Iowa’s first payment of 75-million dollars is expected sometime next year.
