While some people are concerned about the Y-2-K computer glitch effecting banks or utilities at midnight on New Year’s Eve, food suppliers are also readying for the year 2000. The president of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association says we will not run out of food at the end of December.Jerry Fleagle says people do not need to go into the store and buy up canned goods or water like they’re going to be underground in a bomb shelter for a year or two.Fleagle is confident the cash registers, scanners, credit card readers and other electronic gadgets in the grocery stores will still be working in the new year. He says most stores have completed their Y-2-K preparations and most have contingency plans in place.Fleagle says most stores typically have several weeks of inventory reserve of non-perishable food items in case of delivery problems or severe weather. The association covers about a thousand grocery stores in Iowa, roughly 95 percent of all grocery stores in the state.
