Women still lag behind men in politics

Women are breaking barriers in the job world — there’s even a professional league for women basketball players — but women aren’t making as big a break-through in politics. Iowa Commission on the Status of Women director Charlotte Nelson says more Iowa women are joining the political ranks, but there’s not equity yet.Just over 20 percent of state legislators are women — but Nelson points out that just over half the general population is women.Nelson urges women to get involved with a political party, and learn about the issues.Only one of the statewide elected officials in Iowa is a woman.
