Forget about Santa Claus coming down the chimney. Soon the tax man will be knocking on the doors of many Iowans. The National Kidney Foundation’s Iowa chapter is promoting a way for people to get a nice tax break before the year is over — by donating a surplus car, truck or van.Laurel Stephens-Noble, program manager for the Cedar Rapids-based Iowa chapter, says the Kidney Cars Program usually gets 100 or 150 vehicles a year from Iowans. They’re all either sold to dealers at auctions or to salvage yards for parts.Stephens-Noble says donating a car to charity brings a nice tax deduction come April. She says the donors are able to claim “fair market value” for the vehicle, which is NOT always the Blue Book value. For more information, call 800-488-CARS.
