Iowans may be getting duped into spending thousands of dollars when they’re vulnerable — as they’re grieving a loved one in a funeral home. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is holding hearings today in eastern Iowa to talk with people about troubles in the funeral home & cemetery industries.Grassley says the average funeral in the U-S costs 72-hundred dollars, but many people may be fooled into thinking they have to spend more. He says federal rules that are designed to shield people from being tricked at that difficult time apparently aren’t working. He says funeral directors need to hand out an itemized list of all costs and make it clear not all services don’t have to be purchased. Grassley’s first hearing began at 10 a-m and runs until 11:30 at the Graphic Arts Technology Center in Clinton. The 2nd hearing is in Cedar Rapids from 2 to 3:30 p-m in the East Campus Building of Kirkwood Community College.
