Arizona Senator John McCain was making his first appearance on Iowa’s political stage. McCain said he would do away with “pork barrel” spending, such as two-million dollars for the effort to crack down on meth makers and dealers in Iowa.McCain also promised to do away with federal subsides for ethanol, but offered this olive branch to Iowa farmers, saying every nation in the world should be open its markets to Iowa products.During the candidate-to-candidate Q-and-A, Bush attacked McCain’s tax plan as inadequate for lower income Americans.McCain’s response focused on campaign finance reform rather than tax policy, saying we need to the special interest money out of politics to turn the government back to the people.McCain’s rivals then chimed in, saying his reform ideas would hurt the Republican party by tilting the finance system in favor of democrats.
