In 2002, it’s likely Iowans will be able to decide whether the state’s Governors should be limited to eight years in office. Governor Vilsack supports the two-term limit, and the top Republican in the legislature supports the move, too.House Speaker Brent Siegrist of Council Bluffs says eight years is probably enough.Iowans have shown a willingness to keep a Governor around for more than just eight years. From 1968 to 1998, Iowans had just two men in the Governor’s chair: Robert Ray and Terry Branstad. Both were Republicans. If the legislature endorses the two-term limit in 2000, it must also endorse the term restriction in 2002 before it can be placed on the ballot.
