Hog Lot Restrictions Could Be Coming

One legislative leader believes there’s a “glimmer of hope” for Iowans who want new restrictions for large-scale hog operations. House Democrat Leader David Schrader of Monroe says county boards of supervisors in north central Iowa may have struck upon a way to give local officials some say in where hog confinements may be built. A handful of counties, lead by Worth County, are establishing local health department rules governing the placement of hog confinements in their county. Schrader expects this latest skirmish over large-scale hog operations to be settled in the courts rather than the legislature. Schrader made his comments on Iowa Public Television.
