Many federal, state, county and city offices will be closed today to honor the Martin Luther King, Junior, Holiday, but the University of Iowa is open and using the occasion to celebrate diversity.Alice Mathis is director of the U-of-I Office of Student Life. She says it’s not only M-L-K Day, but the entire week that’s being devoted to social consciousness as part of the University’s Human Rights Week.Mathis says the week aims to promote awareness of issues ranging from diversity to social change. One on-going program during the week will zero in on the fact Iowa’s political caucuses will be held in one week.Other events include rap and jazz concerts and a Diversity Research Fair.
