With the drinking age of 21, one state legislator says it makes sense to make college dorms in Iowa “alcohol-free” zones. State Representative Rosemary Thompson is sponsoring a bill which would ban alcohol from all public AND private college dormitories in Iowa. Schools which fail to enforce the ban would lose state money, and students caught with booze in their rooms would face a two-hundred dollar fine. Even students who are 21 — the legal drinking age in Iowa — would face criminal charges, if Thompson’s bill becomes law. Thompson, who is a republican from Marion, is a retired school substance abuse prevention specialist.
