Light pollution is the latest problem the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is asking state legislators to tackle. A D-N-R environmental consultant says most street lights don’t efficently direct light onto the ground and instead allow it to go up into the sky where it’s wasted. It’s also wasting energy, according to David Osterberg, who is spearheading the call for low-glare fixtures. The D-N-R is asking legislators to pass a bill that’d force state agencies to replace old lamps with energy- and light-saving domes in places like parks and on all state roads.Osterberg says the measure would also encourage, but not require, cities to consider the same move. The City of Ames is the first in the state to start retro-fitting its lights to reduce light pollution. Osterberg says the new fixtures could save the state 30 percent on power bills.
