Governor Vilsack has signed into law the 30-million dollars in cuts he and legislators agreed to make in this year’s state budget. The move was made when state tax collections fell below expectations. The state’s Republican Auditor has said the democrat governor’s proposed state budget for next year exceeds state spending limits. Vilsack says Iowa’s democrat Attorney General has reviewed his budget askings, and found them to fall within legal bounds. Vilsack says republican legislators should think twice about accusing him of budget gimmickry. He says the spring of 1999 budget would not have complied with Iowa law had he not vetoed a portion of it. Vilsack says the state budget is tight because there’s not much excess.
