In one of the most unusual chapters of the campaign, Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer last night received the endorsement of the parents of the septuplets. Kenny McCaughey, the father of the seven babies, opened a campaign rally last night by committing his Caucus Night vote to Gary Bauer. The McCaughey’s opened their home in Carlisle to a 250-dollar-per-person fundraiser last night which attracted about 30 Bauer supporters, then Kenney spoke for less than a minute at a 25-dollar-per-person fundraiser which attracted about 80 people. Gary Bauer’s Iowa campaign manager, Marlys Popma, had been a publicity manager for the McCaugheys after the birth of the seven babies. The McCaugheys, you may recall, endorsed Jim Lightfoot’s campaign for Governor in 1998.
