An Iowa Congressman plans to co-sponsor a bill that would ban a fuel additive seen as hazardous to the environment — and to our health. Fourth District Congressman Greg Ganske says M-T-B-E is responsible for widespread water contamination.Ganske, a republican from Des Moines, says the fuel additive was originally put in gasoline to help prevent pollution. He says now it appears M-T-B-E has been found to have a very negative side effect, because just a small amount can destroy a very large water supply. A study found one gallon of M-T-B-E can contaminate 26-million gallons of water.M-T-B-E is banned in California already & Ganske wants it banned nationwide. He says oxygen is added to fuels to reduce emissions of various toxins and other compounds that form smog.Ganske says corn-based ethanol would be a good substitute for M-T-B-E since it poses NO environmental risks and is a renewable fuel source. Congress re-convenes Tuesday after the holiday recess.
