State seeks Supreme Court ruling on bank fees

Iowa legal and financial leaders are appealing to the U-S Supreme Court to make a ruling on the state’s law on automatic teller machines. Iowa’s law which bans A-T-M fees on transactions at machines owned by national banks is being challenged.Bob Brammer, spokesman for the Iowa Attorney General, says the Utah-based national bank called Bank One has won the latest court battle — so Iowa is appealing to the nation’s highest court. While banks CAN charge their own customers A-T-M fees, this law prohibits banks from charging non-customers a fee. Brammer says the national banks are trying to get around the law.The Iowa Banking Superintendent joined Attorney General Tom Miller in making the plea to the high court. Brammer says there may be a decision by spring from the U-S Supreme Court as to whether it will hear the Iowa case.
