Most Iowans apparently don’t know they have the option of donating a dollar to the Iowa Organ Donor Awareness Fund whenever they register their cars or renew the registration. The fund helps people who need transplants pay their bills — and very few people are chipping in.Kelly Sorensen, spokeswoman for the Iowa Donor Network, says a campaign is being launched in each of Iowa’s 99 counties to try and draw attention to the fund at the 99 county treasurer’s offices. Sorensen says she’s finding volunteers in every county who believe in the cause. The fund primarily benefits recipients of organ & tissue transplants, but can also be used by people anywhere in the state who want to help promote the Iowa Donor Network. They can apply for grants to use the money. Sorenson says the list of Iowans who are waiting for transplants is approaching a record level.Sorensen says 254 Iowans are currently on the waiting list for transplants.
