As the latest snowstorm rolls over Iowa, it means many of us are again stuck in our homes, watching T-V and playing Scrabble. Ken Jacobsen is a counselor at the University of Northern Iowa and says one solution to avoiding cabin fever is to find outdoor activities you enjoy. But he says there are also a lot of things we CAN do outside, from sledding and snow-mobiling to cross-country skiing and ice-fishing. Besides jumping into an outdoor or physical activity, Jacobsen says Iowans need to try things they ordinarily wouldn’t try — from academics to a new hobby.Iowa farmers often take extra steps to ensure their livestock don’t get “bored” during the winter — and Jacobsen says people aren’t much different.Parts of Iowa may have nearly a foot of snow on the ground by mid-day.
