The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 90-percent of the known owners of ag drainage wells have taken steps to plug the wells or get permits to keep operating. D-N-R spokesman Mike Anderson says the wells are used to drain water from land to make it suitable for farming.Anderson says the legislature instituted stronger controls over the wells to help prevent pollution. He says the proliferation of large livestock operations increased the concern that the wells might pollute groundwater.Anderson says they’ll continue working to be sure the remaining 33 wells to comply with the regulations.Anderson says 22 of those wells are located in Humboldt County.
