State environmental protection officials hope to continue to force electric utilities to invest in “alternative” sources of energy. Legislators are considering a bill which deregulates electric utilities. Department of Natural Resources Director Paul Johnson is urging legislators to include wind energy and other alternatives in the process.Johnson says it makes sense to invest in Iowa-based alternative energy projects, as Iowans are already paying a lot for energy — which benefits out-of-state interests.Johnson says investing in wind energy, for example, helps create jobs in Iowa. Johnson says his recommendations do not require additional investments in alternative energy sources or on fix-up projects which improve energy efficiency.Johnson made his comments during an appearance on the Iowa Public Television program, “Iowa Press.”
