University of Iowa women’s basketball coach Angie Lee announced this morning she’s resigning effective May 1st. Lee’s team has a 9-17 record after losing Sunday to Purdue, but Lee says she’s not being pushed out. Lee says some changes need to be made in the program and she feels her resignation is the best way to get the changes started.Lee was an assistant at Iowa when she took over five years ago after Vivian Stringer left to take the Rutgers job. Lee was the national coach of the year in the 1995-96 season after the team went 27-4. The team was 12-15 last season. Lee became emotional in thanking her players.There has been criticism that Lee has lost the in-state recruiting war to other schools. A question about that issue upset Lee. She asked reporters to not hurt her players by being critical of their ability. Lee says she leaves the team with the second leading scorer and third leading rebounder in the Big Ten — both who are players from Iowa. Lee says she hasn’t determined what she will do next, but is keeping all of her options open.
