A select group of Iowa State University students will have the chance to study abroad this summer at the “City of Knowledge.” That’s the name given to the former U-S military base beside the Panama Canal which has been converted to a research and education facility. Students would spend the first of nine weeks getting oriented to the area’s history and culture.David Acker is director of International Agriculture Programs at I-S-U. Fort Clayton was turned over to Panama on December 1st of 1999 as the U-S military pulled out of that nation. The 300-acre campus is now the City of Knowledge. Acker says employers who have hired the University’s ag students in the past say they’d like to see future hires have exposure to different cultures.Acker says the Panama study program will be offered this summer for 18 students. He says just living in a foreign country broadens the mind. Students are now being recruited for the program which will run from early May through mid July.
