Homosexual rights issue passes in Davenport

Davenport leaders gave their final okay last night to a measure amending the city’s civil rights ordinance to include homosexuals. Mayor Phil Yerrington defended the plan, which passed 7-to-3.An attempt to amend the ordinance was voted down. That change would’ve allowed exceptions for groups like the Elks Club who would otherwise be forced to rent their halls to groups they consider immoral. Alderman Joe Seng voted -for- the amendment adding “sexual orientation” to the city’s civil rights charter.The issue got so fiery in recent weeks, Davenport had to start using metal detectors at city hall prior to council meetings after a death threat. Alderman Bill Sherwood also voted in favor of the gay rights amendment, but says he respects those with a different view.Davenport joins Ames, Iowa City & Cedar Rapids with similar city ordinances protecting gays from discrimination.
