There’s a “typo” on every letter sent to alert Americans to the Census forms headed for mailboxes nationwide. Christopher Nolte (nohl’-tee) of the Census Bureau’s Des Moines office says it’s a bit embarrasing. Here’s what happened. The contractor who printed the mailing labels for the letters added a “one” before every address — so if you live at 22 Delaware Street, it read 122 Delaware Street. Nolte says every letter had the specially-coded bar at the bottom with the right address, so the post office can deliver the letters.Nolte says to watch your mailbox for the Census forms — the letters were just an advisory that the forms are coming.Every ten years, the U-S government conducts a census. The outcome of the population count determines all sorts of things, like how much government money states, cities and regions get for housing projects — and how many members of Congress each state can send to Washington.
