Last week’s monster jackpot in the Powerball drawing brought new legal questions to the forefront about using the Internet to obtain tickets. Joe Hrdlicka (HURD-lick-ah) is Vice President of Marketing for the Iowa Lottery, which is seeing several legal & illegal options emerge. He says one that got a lot of attention was a website that was giving away Powerball tickets. While Hrdlicka says it’s legal for a website or an individual to give Powerball tickets away, he says he’d caution anyone from buying or selling them on the Internet or otherwise. He says even re-sale at the face value of the ticket — one dollar — is not allowed.Hrdlicka says the Iowa Lottery is aware of several world wide websites where Powerball tickets are being bought, sold, auctioned and traded. The Iowa Lottery is referring the cases to the D-C-I and the F-B-I for investigation and possible prosecution.
