Despite backing from a G-O-P leader and possible support from the Governor, a bill which would increase the penalty for assaulting an athletic official is in “sudden death over-time” at the statehouse. Critics of the bill have filed amendments to make a number of changes, and the House doesn’t have time to debate the matter, according to one leader. Representative Pat Shey, a republican from Cedar Rapids who backs the bill, says assaults against Iowa sports officials have escalated dramatically in past two years.Shey says more officials are quitting because too many parents and spectators are threatening the refs.Governor Tom Vilsack says officials at athletic contests sometimes face a hostile crowd — and he may support the bill.House Republican Leader Christopher Rants of Sioux City says other bills have higher priority, and he may let the bill for refs die.
