A bill which calls upon doctors, clinics and women to provide more information about abortions will be debated in the Iowa Senate this week. Some data about abortions is now reported to the state, but Senator John Redwine says it’s time to collect more information.Redwine, who’s a doctor from Sioux City, says the kind of information which would be collected would not be specific enough to reveal identities.Redwine says the number of abortions performed in Iowa is now available and it’s used to help determine the statewide pregnancy rate, but counties can’t compile a pregnancy rate.Critics of the bill don’t believe the confidentiality rules will work, and anti-abortion activists will find out too much about the Iowa doctors who perform abortions, and the women who seek them.
