A state health official hedges at saying the flu season is over in Iowa, but he does think it’s near death. The influenza season usually runs October through March or April but started early this time around and appears to have ended early as well. Iowa’s assistant epidemiologist Dr. Cort Lohff says the fat lady hasn’t yet sung on the flu season. There haven’t been any confirmed flu cases in at least two weeks. He won’t say the season is over yet, but it’s at least subsiding. As for its impact in Iowa, Dr. Lohff says this flu season hasn’t been any more severe than other recent seasons. Lohff says more Iowans are getting flu shots, but not enough of them are rolling up their sleeves.Despite the thousands of preventive vaccines given every fall, between ten and 20 percent of Iowans get the flu every season.
