Most actions taken by Congress to relieve high gasoline prices are long-term solutions, according to Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley. He admits there’s little lawmakers can do to bring an immediate price cut. Grassley proposes cutting off 415-million dollars in aid to OPEC nations and halting all arms sales.Grassley also proposes spending millions more dollars to research alternative fuels and other renewable energy sources.He also thinks soy diesel could hold great future benefits. Grassley is holding a public meeting today from noon to 1 p-m in Audubon to hear concerns from people about the federal budget. Meetings are also scheduled for this afternoon from 4 to 5 in Logan, tomorrow in Greenfield and Guthrie Center, and Thursday in Marengo.Tens of thousands of Iowans should have already gotten their U-S Census forms in the mail — and many more will find their forms in their mailboxes within days. Senator Grassley is joining the chorus of officials urging people to complete and return the documents.Grassley says the census is a vital measure of our state.All information given in the census is confidential.The “La Nina” weather pattern will continue to bring Iowa problems this summer, according to a federal government forecast. It says nearly half the nation will be hit by drought, with midwestern farm states taking the worst of the dry weather. Senator Grassley recommends crop insurance.Grassley says there’s no sense in taking a risk on poor weather when that risk can be managed — to an extent. He says of last year’s nine-BILLION dollar ag appropriations bill, 400-MILLION was included to make sure the costs of crop insurance were kept steady.
