The class 4-A quarterfinals highlighted Wednesday’s action at the boy’s state basketball tournament. Top seeded Johnston cruised past Marshalltown 54-38. Johnston coach Jeff Simpson said it was the defensive battle he expected.Johnston took command by outscoring Marshalltown 19-10 in the second quarter.Glen Worley’s free throw with 46-seconds remaining turned out to be the game winner as Iowa City West edged Dubuque Wahlert 48-47 and avenged a regular season loss to the Golden Eagles.The game had a wild finish and Wahlert had two chances to take the lead but committed two turnovers in the final 11-seconds.Nick Boyd had 14 of his team high 16-points in the second half, including three of four free throws in the final 30-seconds as Southeast Polk rallied past Davenport Central 47-44. Boyd said he had more success in the second half by getting to the basket.6-8 center Karl Peterson had an outstanding game for Davenport Central finishing with 19-points and 13-rebounds. He said the Rams made the key plays down the stretch.
