Court ruling on students fees won’t impact Iowa

The U-S Supreme Court says universities can require college students to pay activity fees which finance groups the students may oppose. The case involved a University of Wisconsin student who didn’t want his money financing certain student organizations. The Executive Director of the State Board of Regents says the ruling doesn’t have much impact on Iowa’s three state universities.Frank Stork says students in the state have the chance to say where the money will go through a check-off system that’s not used at Wisconsin. Stork says that check-off is important in giving students a voice in how the funds are spent.Stork says students at Iowa State University pay two-hundred-69-dollars in activity fees. At Iowa, the activity fee is one-hundred-73 dollars and at the University of Northern Iowa, it’s one-hundred-70 dollars.Stork says student government adds another level of input for spending the fees.
