A Bettendorf firefighter who was fired for mailing controversial material from work has lost his appeal to get his job back.Kevin McDonnell was fired for mailing anti-abortion literature from work to a neighbor last February. McDonnell said he was sending the literature at the request of his wife. The Bettendorf Civil Service Commission upheld the firing, saying McDonnell knew what was in the package. The commission says the mail was harassment intended to upset the neighbor who was going to get an abortion. The commission also said McDonnell has shown a pattern of insubordination with past incidents in which he’s gotten into trouble on the job.
