A northeast Iowa legislator is under fire for an outburst of foul language uttered near elementary students visiting the statehouse. Representative Mike Jager, a republican from La Porte City, loudly uttered three words as he left the House floor yesterday morning, comments directed at Representative Jeri Huser, a democrat from Altoona. The incident occured during House debate of the sex offender registry, which lists the addresses of convicted sex offenders who’ve been paroled. Jager would not disclose why, but he said the issue is “very personal.” Jager says a comment made that he was leaving because he didn’t care about the issue is what set him off. Jager says he was walking off the House floor to attend a meeting. Huser says she made note of his exit during her speech, saying she didn’t think he was interested because he was leaving. Huser says her comment didn’t give Jager the right to make obscene comments.Huser says she really doesn’t want an apology for herself, she wants Jager to apologize to the innocent by-standers who heard his outburst. Jager was asked by a reporter if he felt a kinship with Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy, who recently apologized for swearing at a ref in the Cyclone’s N-C-Double-A loss to Michigan State. Jager says he and the coach will probably exchange Christmas cards.Last year, Jager drew fire for accidentally sending sexually-explicit e-mail to fellow legislators and he was criticized for wearing an offensive t-shirt to the statehouse while the legislature wasn’t in session.
