More than 400 Iowa students are aiming for thousands of dollars in scholarships at the Iowa State Science & Technology Fair. The wide variety of displays is being shown off today at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.Andrea Spencer is director of the Iowa Science Fair, which is drawing contestants in 7th through 12th grades. She says many students use this annual statewide event as a springboard into college and into very successful careers.One high school senior from Des Moines, Feng Zhang, has won hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarships already. He’s sitting out this year’s state event, by the way. Spencer says it’s not just the kids from Iowa’s big cities who win the competition. She says many of the smaller towns are represented and do a great job.The top prize is a five-thousand dollar, four-year tuition grant to any of Iowa’s three public universities or Drake. The event concludes tonight with an awards ceremony at 5:30. Winners go on to regional & national fairs.
