Governor Tom Vilsack has struck down a bill which called for a 24-hour waiting period for abortions. The bill also called on clinics to give women seeking an abortion pamphlets about adoption, motherhood and the father’s child support obligations. Vilsack first expressed concerns about the bill in mid-March, saying he’d not heard any great call from the public for the bill. In his veto message, Vilsack said the bill told adult woman what to think and when to think it. Supporters of the legislation said state government enforces all sorts of waiting periods, like the 30-day waiting period for sterilization of men or women who are on welfare.
