The Des Moines police department is joining a nationwide program to distribute free gunlocks to residents. Lieutenant Kelly Willis says the department will receive two-thousand gunlocks as part of the “Project Homesafe” program. He says it’s a pro-active approach to the problem. The legislature debated, but failed to pass, a law making gunlocks manditory. Some lawmakers questioned whether the locks would really prevent gun violence. Willis says he’s seen two children killed in accidental shootings in his 23 years on the force and he believes the locks can help. Willis says Des Moines is the first department in Iowa to take part in the program, although other departments have called Des Moines asking for information on the program.Willis says larger cities such as Las Vegas, Oakland and Atlanta are taking part in this program.
