State keeping eye on greyhound adoptions

A case of possible illegal greyhound sales in eastern Iowa has prompted the state to step up its monitoring of dog adoptions. A Cedar Rapids man is accused of taking Wisconsin dogs for adoption and selling them for laboratory testing. The state Ag Department’s Horse and Dog Racing Program keeps tabs on 70-some greyhound kennels statewide. Morris Boswell is the bureau chief and says he was taken by surprise, as he’s never had a problem with people selling greyhounds.Iowa has two dog tracks, in Dubuque and Council Bluffs, for which kennels are producing hundreds of dogs every year. Boswell says anyone at a kennel who’s found to be mistreating or illegally selling dogs in Iowa faces losing their license. He says the Cedar Rapids is now under investigation by Wisconsin authorities.Boswell says the state Ag Department and the Iowa Greyhound Association are teaming up to examine current dog adoption laws and to promote more adoption of greyhounds by Iowa families.
