The Iowa State football team will close out spring drills Saturday with an intrasquad game and coach Dan McCarney says his team has made a lot of progress during workouts.The Cyclones have several starters returning from last year but 16-redshirt freshman are in the two-deep. McCarney says that class has helped improve depth and will help improve special teams play.After helping lead the Iowa State basketball team to the N-C-A-A elite eight, Steve Johnson has donned the pads this spring and will play for the Cyclones next fall. Johnson has spent time at linebacker and strong safety and McCarney expects him to help next year.McCarney says Johnson will be put on a football scholarship next year.After five consecutive seasons of a Davis at running back junior Ennis Haywood moves into the starting spot and says he relishes the opportunity.Haywood feels he can be a productive runner but admits his style is much different from Darren Davis. He says he doesn’t have the spins of Davis, but does have a few “shakes” of his own. Haywood was hampered by an ankle injury last season and says his production will hinge on staying healthy.
