After a record increase in gasoline prices earlier this year, state officials now say Iowa has also seen a near-record drop in prices. Iowa motorists are now paying about a dollar-35 per gallon on average, a drop of 15-cents a gallon from last month.Ward Lenz is an energy data analyst at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. He says the last time gas prices fell that far, that fast, was in February of 1986. Lenz predicts Iowa may buck the usual summertime trend and see gas prices continue to edge downward. He says prices could drop a few more cent to a nickle.Lenz says the flip-flopping of OPEC nations’ oil production levels is responsible for the rollercoaster price levels. He says the prices -were- expected to drop once OPEC agreed to raise production levels. He says they increased production over their quota level. The current dollar-35 statewide average is well below the dollar-50 many of us were paying a month ago. Still, that dollar-35 average is 27-cents a gallon higher than one year ago.
