The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission is in northwest Iowa today talking about the so-called digital divide and seeing how Iowans are spanning it. William Kennard says it’s important high-speed or “broad-band” Internet access isn’t just for people in big cities.Kennard says since high-speed access, like through a cable modem, is not widespread, now is the time laws need to be written to make that access as common as the telephone. The F-C-C chief says the federal government should work to make sure all Americans take advantage of faster connections to the World Wide Web with incentives.Kennard is visiting the northwestern Iowa town of Hawarden today, where the city has taken the responsibility of broad-band access into its own hands. Kennard spoke Wednesday in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
