The State Racing and Gaming Commission reviewed the financial audits of the state’s race tracks and casinos at their meeting Thursday in Osceola. Commission Chairman Bill Hansen says the reports paint a bright picture for the industry. Hansen says the industry is probably at its strongest level in history. The commission meeting was held at the Lakeside Casino and Resort — the state’s newest casino . The Lakeside Casino has been open just over three months, but Hansen says it’s already adding to the strong standing of the gambling industry. The casino originally estimated an annual gross of 40-million dollars, but are on a pace to top 55-million.Hansen says his only concern is an increase in the gambling tax that could cause problems for the Dubuque Greyhound track. Hansen says the tax could kill the track if it isn’t changed as the tax is the only expenditure that keeps going up.The legislature failed in an attempt last year to scale back the increase in the gambling tax that also impacts the Council Bluffs dog track and the horse track in Altoona.
