The unemployment rate in Iowa set more records in March.Sha Khan with Iowa Workforce Development says the state set records for lowest unemployment rate at two-point-one percent, record low for people who are unemployed at 33-thousand-100 and record number of people who are working at over one-point-five million. The unemployment rate for last month was two-point-two percent. Khan says the continued low unemployment defies predictions. There have been some plant shut downs and layoffs announced in recent weeks, but Khan says those workers probably won’t end up impacting the unemployment rate as workers with severance packages aren’t counted as unemployed.Khan says the tight labor market helps workers to find new jobs once their severance packages run out, and most don’t end up filing for unemployment. The national unemployment rate remained at four-point-one percent last month.
