High schoolers from across northeastern Iowa are meeting in Waterloo today for the first-ever Youth Summit 2000. Iowa Second District Congressman Jim Nussle helped organize the gathering of mostly 10th and 11th graders and says it’s long overdue.Nussle gave the Summit’s opening remarks but he says he’ll spend the rest of the time not talking and instead listening to the ideas of the students and the other speakers.Other speakers include former University of Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable, Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver, Waterloo’s police chief, the director of U-N-I’s Upward Bound Program and several top agents with the D-E-A and the A-T-F. Nussle, a republican from Manchester, says the students are learning how to better network with each other today so maybe they can head off problems before they go too far.The Summit is gathering more than 200 students from 22 Iowa high schools and runs until 3 p-m at the Waterloo Center for the Arts.
